Someone once told me that Americans live to work instead of work to live. I'm not sure how I feel about that. My father showed me that you have to work to pay your way through life. Everything had to earn its keep, even the horses in the barn. There was no such thing as owning something for mere pleasure with my dad. My mom, on the other hand, wanted to keep everything for pleasure. She loved raising canaries, doves, plants, baby bunnies, you name it. She couldn't help herself, she just loved taking care of every single baby she could get her hands on. We all have parents who send us messages about how we go about making our dreams come true. Hard work, don't give up, every time you get knocked down, just get up again... I've been listening. What I did not know was how to take the steps to getting closer to how I want to feel... So without further ado, let's get to the steps.
STEP ONE: Visualization. Take a moment and imagine with me.... Close your eyes, take a deep, deep breath. Let it out slowly and feel your feet on the ground. Do it again. Breathe in deeply and let it out slowly. One more time. Three times gives your body and mind the opportunity to plug into one another. Now, what would you feel like if you never thought about money again. Yes, you actually need to visualize and pretend here. Imagine a life where money didn't exist, you felt good every day, you were healthy, whole and complete.
What do you see yourself doing?
STEP TWO: Digging deeper... Stay with that feeling - that amazing feeling of having your best day where you are so happy to be alive, you're doing exactly what you want to do and the world is exactly how you want it to be. What else do you see yourself doing?
(This second step is necessary because most likely in the first step you were resting, on vacation, doing nothing. It happens to every client I do this with. They are so exhausted from life they first imagine a life of doing nothing.)
STEP THREE: Write it down. Write down exactly how you want to feel. Write down what you see yourself being tomorrow, the next day and the next year, and the next five years. It's all unfolding already. The moment you visualize your life the way you want it to be, you have planted the seed. The moment you write it down, you have watered that seed.
Now, you're ready for STEP FOUR:
What is one tiny thing you could do today to move toward that feeling? It could be anything, you get to decide. If you did one small thing every day, by the end of the April, you would be 33 steps closer to your dream. How cool is that!
